Groups of base oils according to API standards

Groups of base lubricant oils (Based Oil) can be divided into 5 groups.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) or abbreviat ed as

API has set standards to divide groups of base lubricant oils. The criteria for dividing

base lubricant groups are based on the following

3 factors for division:

1. Sulfur Percentag e or the amount of sulfur in the base oil.

This value indicates that the lower the percentag e of sulfur,

the higher the purity of the oil (Purity of Oil) and reduce the risk of corrosion of the system.

When the oil is used, the amount of sulfur in the oil is difficult to avoid. From natural petroleum oil,

even though it has been refined to increase the purity of the oil and reduce the sulfur content,

it cannot be all removed. In practice, sulfur in the oil is useful in the function of temperatu re

resistanc e and helps with some mechanica l propertie s. But if there is a lot,

it will be harmful to the rubber seals in the system. And corrode copper, brass, etc.

If it is a higher group of oil, the sulfur content will be set not to exceed 0.03%.

2. Saturatio n Percentag e The saturatio n value is measured as a percentag e.

It is an index of protectio n against oil deteriora tion. The higher the % saturatio n,

the more protectio n against deteriora tion. Saturatio n% more than 90%

will be classifie d in Group 2 and Group

3. Viscosity Index It is an indicator of the change in oil viscosity

with changing temperatu re. In the practice of industria l lubricant productio n,

additives are added to improve the propertie s of the lubricant . In terms of adjusting

the viscosity of the oil, a viscosity modifier is added

so that it can be used for its intended purpose.

Groups 1-3 are petroleum oils obtained from the refining process (Refinery Process)

It is a mineral oil base oil. Groups 4 and 5 are obtained by chemical synthesis .

Or known as synthetic oils (Synthetic Oils), where synthetic

oils have propertie s in many aspects that are more outstandi ng than mineral oil base oils

because they were developed to overcome the limitatio ns of mineral oil base oils

and are more resistant to deteriora tion. But the price is higher than petroleum oil,

so it is popularly used in some jobs that require special propertie s.

Outstanding propertie s of each group of base oils

Each group of base oils has different physical propertie s and chemical propertie s. In the industry, the selection of a group of base oils to produce products takes into account the factors of usage, efficienc y, and price of the product. Factors affecting the price of the product The higher the group, the higher the price will be. This is because in 1 barrel of oil there will be 80% - 96% base oil,

depending on the product to be produced and the quality improvers that are added to increase various propertie s. With the current developme nt of industria l lubricant productio n technolog y, each oil producer has productio n technolog y that is not far apart. Producers who can control the cost of base oils will be able to set good product prices, which is beneficia l to consumers .

In the group of mineral oil base oils (Groups 1-3), some products will mix Group 1 and Group 2 or Group 2 and Group 3 base oils for use in productio n because they want the outstandi ng propertie s of each group of base oils and the price is much cheaper than using only Group 2 or Group 3 base oils, while still maintaini ng the standard propertie s and the product price is competiti ve.

Group I is mineral oil that has gone through one basic refining process.

It is popular in industry because it is easy to find, cheap, and has good general propertie s.

Group II is mineral oil. Its propertie s are similar to Group 1

and at present the price is not much different from Group 1 but it has better anti-oxidant propertie s. It is popular in industry, similar to Group

1. Group III is mineral oil that has gone through more refining processes than Group

2 base oil making it purer. It has outstandi ng propertie s in terms of pressure and temperatu re resistanc e.

Group IV is synthetic oil that is popular in industry.
It can withstand very high temperatu res. It can withstand very high heat
and cold and has a long service life.

Group 5 (Group V) is a group outside of Group 1 to Group

4. Its use will depend mainly on the desired propertie s.
It is a synthetic oil. Examples of base oils in this group are PAOS (Polyalpha olefins),
Alkylated Aromatic, Di-Esters, Polyol Esters, Phosphate Esters, Polyglyco ls, Silicones, Silicate Esters, etc.

There are 3 types of base oils currently in use: vegetable or animal oils, mineral oils, and synthetic oils.

However, mineral oil is mostly used because it is of good quality and cheap. Other types of oils are used only in applicati ons that require certain special propertie s.

1. Vegetable or Animal Oils In the past, they were used in many applicati ons. However, since vegetable or animal oils obtained from nature tend to have low chemical stability and are easily deteriora ted during use, they must go through a quality improveme nt process, which greatly increases the price, and so they are no longer popular. Familiar vegetable oils include castor oil, palm oil, and animal oils that used to be used include lard and fish oil. Currently, vegetable or animal oils are rarely used as base oils, and are only used in lubricati ng applicati ons made from petroleum, such as to increase slipperin ess. And water compatibi lity, etc.

2. Mineral Oils are the most commonly used base oils
because in addition to being good quality, the price is also cheap. Mineral oil is obtained by taking the part at the bottom of the atmospher ic distillat ion column and going through a vacuum distillat ion process to separate the clear and thick lubricati ng oils. The remaining residue is used to produce asphalt. The type and amount of mineral oil separated depends on the type of crude oil being refined. Some crude oils are not suitable for producing mineral oil.

Mineral oil obtained from vacuum distillat ion is usually not of good enough quality to be used to produce lubricati ng oil. It must go through various processes to remove unwanted substance s in order to have good chemical and thermal stability . Mineral oils used to make lubricant s are classifie d according to the viscosity index. The nature of viscosity change with temperatu re is divided into 3 types: high, medium and low viscosity index types. Mineral oils with a high viscosity index are obtained from the distillat ion of naphtheni c crude oil.

3. Synthetic Oil is an oil that is synthesiz ed by chemical processes.
The starting material used is usually from petroleum . There are many types of synthetic oils used, but they are quite expensive . Currently, they are used as base oils for special applicati ons that require high viscosity index, low pour point and low evaporati on.

Commonly used synthetic oils include Polyalpha olefins (PAO), which have a very high viscosity index, very low pour point, low evaporati on and good resistanc e to oxidation . They are increasin gly used because they are cheaper and easier to produce. Esters, both Diester and Complex Ester, are used as base oils for applicati ons that require extreme temperatu re changes, such as jet engine turbine oils. Esters have a very high viscosity index, low evaporati on and good stability .


Phosphate Esters are used to make non-flammable hydraulic oils.

Polyglyco ls have high boiling points and low pour points and are used in high temperatu re applicati ons such as brake fluid and non-flammable hydraulic oils. Silicones are used in high temperatu re applicati ons.

Halgenated Hydrocarb ons such as Chloroflu orocarbon s are used to make oxygenate d engine oil because they are chemicall y and thermally stable. Polypheny l Ethers have very high thermal stability and are resistant to nuclear radiation . They are used in applicati ons with temperatu res as high as 500 C, such as hydraulic oils in spacecraf t.

Additives Modern machinery and engines are designed to be smaller, faster, and with higher oil loads. Lubricant s in such engines often have to face high temperatu res, stresses, and loads. Pure base lubricant s are often not of good enough quality to perform their functions completel y and have a reasonabl e service life. Therefore, the right amount of additives must be added to enhance the chemical and physical propertie s of the base lubricant to be suitable for the required applicati on. There are many types and types of additives, but the most commonly used are

antioxidants, anti-wear agents, anti -rust agents, anti-foam agents, extreme pressure agents, viscosity index enhancers, detergent s, dispersan ts, alkalinit y enhancers

Lubricants are usually produced for specific uses, such as engine oil, engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic oil, etc. In order to produce a type of lubricant, the functions that the lubricant must perform and the condition s that the lubricant must experienc e while performin g its lubricati on function must be considere d. Then the propertie s of the lubricant that are required can be determine d, and the base oil and type and amount of additives that are appropria te for the required job can be selected. Therefore, each type of lubricant uses a different type of base oil and amount of additives . Most of the additives added to the lubricant are chemicals, which are usually weakly acidic or weakly alkaline, but some are neutral. The complexit y of formulati ng a lubricant lies in the selection of different types of additives that must be present together, do not react with each other, and sometimes enhance each other's propertie s. Therefore, mixing or interchan ging different types of oils is not advisable . Because there is a risk that the chemicals that improve the quality of the two types of oil may react with each other, precipita te and deteriora te their propertie s. In addition to having tested clearly that the two oils are compatibl e, the four propertie s of the base oil that help determine the required efficienc y are:

Pour point is The lowest temperatu re at which the oil can flow, which determine s the pour point of the oil.

Viscosity is The resistanc e of the oil to flow is called viscosity . For example, honey will be more viscous than water.Viscosity Index When the temperatu re of the oil changes, the viscosity of the oil will also change, or what is called the Viscosity Index (VI). For example, oil with a high viscosity index, the viscosity will change less with temperatu re than oil with a low viscosity . The multi-grade engine oil that car manufactu rers want is a high viscosity base oil. It is considere d the first component of the developme nt process. High viscosity index base oil has a lower evaporati on property and is designed to be used at both low and high temperatu res.

Purity The component s of many types of lubricant s, such as sulfur, nitrogen, and polycycli c aromatic compounds, must be within strict limits.

In summary The important thing to understan d about base oil is that finished engine oil has base oil as the main component . Therefore, choosing the right type of base oil is important in developin g oil that will help lubricate various metal parts and work efficient ly. Base oil is only one part of engine oil. Scientist s and engineers must also consider the impact of technolog y and additives . The final step in lubricant is the combinati on of base oils, additives and applicati on knowledge .
