Tetrachlo roethylen e, also known under the systemati c name tetrachlo roethene or perchloro ethylene, and abbreviat ions such as "perc" (or "PERC"), and "PCE", is a chlorocar bon with the formula C2Cl4. It is a colorless liquid widely used for dry cleaning of fabrics, hence it is sometimes called "dry-cleaning fluid". It also has its uses as an effective automotiv e brake cleaner. It has a mild sweet odor, similar to the smell of chlorofor m, detectabl e by most people at a concentra tion of 1 part per million (1 ppm). Tetrachlo roethylen e is an excellent nonpolar solvent for organic materials . Otherwise, it is volatile, highly stable and nonflamma ble, and has low toxicity. For these reasons, it has been widely used in dry cleaning worldwide since the 1930s. The chemist Sylvia Stoesser (1901–1991) suggested Tetrachlo roethylen e to be used in dry cleaning as an alternati ve to highly flammable dry-cleaning solvents such as naphtha. It is also used to degrease metal parts in the automotiv e and other metalwork ing industrie s, usually as a mixture with other chlorocar bons. It appears in a few consumer products including paint strippers, aerosol preparati ons and spot removers.

Especiall y appreciat ed in dry-cleaning, thank to its particula r property high solvency power towards fat and other soils, but not aggressiv e towards delicate garments and ornaments . Recommend ed to remove greases, oils, waxes, resins, especiall y where a high boiling point is required. Used in current metal degreasin g operation s and is very effective in vapor phase degreasin g. Use as the dry-cleaning solvent of choice for high street, industria l and hospital laundries . For general purpose cleaning and dry-cleaning, solvent degreaser .
